Behind every strong woman lies a commitment to self-care and maintenance of good health. Amidst the endless responsibilities of our daily lives, it is essential to remember that staying in the pink of health is the foundation enabling us to excel in every aspect of life. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is through regular health screening tests, which can hold the key to early detection and successful treatment of various health conditions.
Here are some of the common health issues for women and the recommended screenings to keep on top of your health.
1. Breast Cancer Screenings
Breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer among women in Singapore, accounting for 29% of cancer cases from 2016 to 2020. On top of the recommended breast self-examinations once a month, regular mammogram screenings are the most reliable way to protect against breast cancer. Going for regular mammograms can help identify abnormalities in breast tissue and allow for timely intervention. Women aged 40 to 49 years old are advised to go for a mammogram once a year, while those 50 years old and above are advised to do so once every two years.
2. Cervical Health Screenings
Cervical Cancer is the tenth most common cancer for women in Singapore, and can be effectively prevented and treated with early detection. Regular Pap smear tests and human papillomavirus (HPV) tests are crucial in detecting and identifying any abnormalities that may lead to cervical cancer. Women between the age of 25 to 69 years old are advised to undergo a Pap test once every three to five years, as recommended by their healthcare provider.
3. Heart / Cardiovascular Screenings
High blood pressure and high cholesterol levels are common conditions that can increase the risk of heart disease, which accounted for almost one-third of deaths in Singapore in 2022. Performing regular blood pressure measurements, cholesterol screenings, and other cardiovascular risk assessments can allow for early detection and prevention of complications.
4. Bone Health Assessments
Osteoporosis, a condition characterised by weakened bones, affects a large number of women as they age. The most common places that fracture are the hip, spine, wrist, ribs, pelvis and upper arms. To assess bone health and risk of fractures, a bone mineral density test is used to measure how much bone calcium is present and gauge if bone density is in decline.
5. Reproductive Health Screenings
In addition to health screenings for more common conditions, it is also important to prioritise reproductive health screenings, especially for those looking to expand their families. Pelvic screenings, fertility evaluations and preconception tests can help assess and identify key reproductive health concerns, as well as provide valuable insights into overall health and family planning needs.
Apart from the conditions and types of health screenings mentioned above, other factors may influence the need for other specific tests, including age, family history, and personal health habits. It is essential to discuss your individual health needs with a healthcare professional, who can provide personalised guidance on appropriate and required screenings.
